C- How EducAtlas works :
EducAtlas always post a menu line at the top of the screen.
You can open this menu :
- with a mouse : click the left button of the mouse on the desired menu option
- with the keyboard : press the Alt key with the first letter of the desired
menu option. For example : pressing Alt and U will open the "Utilities" menu.
Once the menu is opened, move between options with the cursor keys and validate
by pushing Enter or clicking with the left button of the mouse.
III- Using EducAtlas :
1- Help functions :
A- On line help :
An on-line help corresponding with the sub-programme you're using can be
obtained by pressing the F1 key (or clicking the mouse on the "Help" menu).
A window opens in the middle of the screen with the help text. You can scroll
the text with cursor keys, or close the window with Escape.
B- Lexicon :
The lexicon contains définitions of specific terms used in the programme.
To use it, open the "Utilities" menu by pressing the Alt key together with the
U key, or clicking with the mouse.
Then validate the "Lexicon" option.
A window opens in the middle of the screen. You can scroll the text using
cursor keys, or close the window using Escape.
2- Exploring the planet :
A- The explore sub-programme :
With EducAtlas you can freely discover countries. Open the "Discover" menu by
pressing the Alt and the D keys, then validate the "Explore" option.
With a mouse, press the right button of the mouse on any country to make the
country's data sheet appear. Then push space bar to close the sheet.
If you have no mouse, a cursor will appear in the middle of the screen. You
can move it with the keys : 2, 4, 6 and 8. To close the sheet, hit the space
bar. To quit the "Explore" option, press Escape.
B- The "Localize" sub-programme :
With this option you can obtain data on any country you have specified and
localize it in the world.
First, select the "Localize" option into the "Discover" menu. The programme
will show a list of countries names. You can scroll the list with cursor keys
or the mouse, or jump to the desired country by pressing its first letter. Then
validate.
EducAtlas will show the country on the world's map. Then you can quit this
sub-programme by pressing the Escape key. If you hit any other key, the
programme will "zoom", enlarging the map. Basic informations about the country
will be displayed on the right part of the screen.
C- International organisations :
If you open the "Organisations" menu (by pressing the Alt key and the O key
together), you obtain a list of international organisations.
Select one and validate. EducAtlas will draw a map showing the countries which
belong to the organisation. A short text presents the essential facts about
the organisation you have selected.
D- Ecosystem :
Open the "Discover" menu and select the "Ecosystem" option. This will draw a
map of ecosystems. This map may be useful, for example, to work on developing
countries.
E- The "Evolution" option :
In the "Discover" menu, the "Evolution" option is an annual updated option.
For this year it is dedicated to USSR problems.
3- Map drawing :
N.B.: Chapter 4 explains how to draw maps with crossed-sorting. To save or
print maps, see chapter 6.
A- Numerical data :
The programme opens a window in the middle of the screen like this :
_______________________
!_______ Title________! <-- selected criterion
! minimum and maximum ! <-- world's minimum and maximum
! TAB !
! ENTER ! <-- actions
! ESCAPE !
!---------------------!
! 1. category ! <-- 4 categories
! !
! from ! <-- enter the first number
! to ! <-- enter the second number
! ok Quit ! <-- validate (ok) or quit
!_____________________!
EducAtlas allows you to state precisely the range (from so to so) you want to
show. The user defines the categories of the map. To help him, the window shows
the minimum and the maximum world's values.
You just have to enter the first value, then the second one. If you want to go
back and modify a number, use the TAB key, or, with a mouse, click on that
number.
When a first category is validated, the programme will ask for another one and
then until the fourth category. If you want to quit before the 4th category,
go to the "quit" box and validate or press the Escape key.
When the map is drawn, you are automatically in the "explore" mode (see chapter
2).
B- Political regimes, religions, languages :
The programme shows a list of possible choices. Validate the one you want. You
can draw as far as 4 categories.
C- To change colors :
Caution ! If your computer has a CGA graphic card this option will not work !
If your computer has an EGA or VGA graphic card you can :
- change the colors used in drawing maps
- substitute colors with hatchings.
To change the colors, select in the "Utilities" menu the option : "Color Mode".
Then enter the numbers of desired colors.
To substitute hatchings to colors, select in the same menu the option :
"Hatching Mode".
4- Map drawing with crossed sorting :
With EducAtlas you can draw a map by crossing two criteria. For example, you
can select muslim countries which aren't arab countries; or check if there are
"rich" countries with an high infant mortality rate. The countries will be
coloured on the screen.
The criteria can be numerical data or key-words : religions, political regimes.
In this case you can state precisely if you select only the countries
responding to your condition (for example democratic countries only), or all
the countries except the countries responding to your condition (for example
all countries except démocracies). So is it possible to answer specific
questions.
For that, you must :
1- open the "Sort" menu by pressing together the Alt and the S keys and hitting
Enter.
2- select your first criterion. If it is numerical data, you must specify the
range (from so to so). If it is a key-word you must select it from the list and
validate with Enter. Then select the only or except option. You can move
between these options with the TAB key. You validate with the space bar.
3- When your first criterion is selected, you have to chose the second one.
5- Sorting Countries :
EducAtlas enables you to situate statistically the country of your choice.
You must open the "Discover" menu and select the "Sort" option. Then choose a
country into the list. You can scroll the list with the cursor keys or the
mouse; or jump states by pressing the country's first letter. You validate with
Enter or with the left button of the mouse.
A horizontal menu appears at the bottom of the screen. You can move into this
menu with cursor keys or with the mouse. You validate the desired criterion
with Enter or with the left button of the mouse.
The programme will sort countries and colour them diferently according to the
selected coutry.
For example, if the country of your choice has a GNP per capita of $ 10000,
the programme will show :
- the countries whose GNP is inferior to 50% of the GNP of the refered country
(so inferior to $ 5000)
- the countries whose GNP is inferior between 33 to 50% (from $ 5000 to $ 6667)
- the countries whose GNP is near : GNP inferior to less than 33% and the
countries whose GNP is superior to less than 33% ($ 6668 to $ 13333)
- the countries whose GNP is superior from 33% to 50% (from $ 13334 to $ 15000)
- the countries whose GNP is superior to more than 50% (over $ 15000).
The same calculation is made for over numerical data.
For religions, political regimes, the programme shows the other countries of
the same type (same religion, same regime).
To print or save the map, you first must quit the horizontal menu by validating
the "end" option of this menu. This will make the general menu work.
6- Printing and saving maps :
A- Printing :
To print the screen, open the "utilities" menu and select "print" option.,
using the Alt U and Alt P keys.
EducAtlas lets you choose between two types of printer :
- dot matrix printer : Epson FX emulation
- laser printer : Laser Jet II emulation.
You can move between the options with the cursor keys or the mouse.
Caution ! The printer must be on the first parallel port (LPT 1).
B- Saving :
EducAtlas lets you save the map you have made into a file.
If your computer has an EGA or VGA graphic card, the map will be saved in a
PCX formated file. This format can be read by the most popular publishing or
drawing softwares. It will be easy for you to integrate the map you have
realized into your publication for example.
If your computer has a CGA graphic card, the map wil be saved in the basic
bsave/bload format.
To save screen, open the "Utilities" menu and select the "save screen" option.
IV- Technical Information
1- the data and updating database :
A- Updating database :
The file "States.atl" countains the statistical data available at the end of
1992 : the data of the year 1991.
EducAtlas lets you update this database. For that , use the UP2DATE programme
delivered with EducAtlas (complete version). Up2date enables you to update only
one country or all the countries, as you prefer.
(Up2date is not delivered in evaluation version)
B- Sources :
To obtain credible statistical data for more than 140 countries is a real
problem !
Many countries have no statistics office : for example many developing
countries. Some states give wrong information.
We used data issued from :
- The World Bank : World Bank Atlas, World Bank Report.
- United Nations series.
- FMI series.
- OECD reports.
The lexicon gives more information on each datum.
In some cases, we found no good materials, but had to choose between different
data ... and found none credible ! It is a problem for the GNP of "socialist"
countries such as Russia.
The programme doesn't know all the countries of the world. Some are too small
for a computer screen, and have a very small part in the world's economic life :
Monaco for example. However we retained small countries which have a great
importance : Hong Kong, Singapoure for example, and we enlarged them on screen.
Please inform us for errors. Thank you also for any suggestions !
2- In case of trouble :
A- The EducAtlas files (evaluation version) :
- Educatla.exe : the programme
- Worldtst.pcx : world EGA map
- Worldtst.atl : world CGA map
- Evolang.pcx : evolution EGA file
- Evolang.atl : evolution CGA file
- Ecosyste.pcx : ecosystem EGA file
- Ecosyste.atl : ecosystem CGA file
- Statests.atl : database
- Mondata.atl : cartographical file
- Lexicon.atl : lexicon file
- Organizd.atl : organisations file
- Help01.atl : help file
- Help02.atl : " "
- Help04.atl : " "
- Help07.atl : " "
- Educatla.doc : this documentation file.
B- To improve utilisation :
- To work in CGA mode : type Educatla -c then hit Enter.
- To work without using the mouse : type Educatla -n then hit Enter.
- To work in hatching mode (for example with monochrome monitor) : type
Educatla -m then hit Enter.
- To work without using the EGA or VGA video RAM : usually EducAtlas uses 256 Ko
of the video ram. You can make EducAtlas using only 128 Ko by typing Educatla
-p. That means that EducAtlas will only use the page 0 of the video ram.
